Artic Getaways

Due to no light pollution – Villa Haugen provides an ideal viewing point for the Aurora Borealis / Northern lights in the area. With the Lofoten archipelago as a background you will have a magnificent outline for the night sky. As a guest at Villa Haugen – you can enjoy the northern lights directly from the house, inside the gazebo/pavilion or in the hot tub down by the sea. The season of the Aurora Borealis is normally from September to March.

With the Lofoten archipelago as a background the Steigen area explodes into life on the arrival of the midnight sun each year. It becomes hard to tell the difference between night and day and even harder to get to bed in due time. The season of the midnight sun is from the end of May until mid July.

From Villa Haugen you have a direct view of the entire Lofoten archipelago. The dramatic jagged mountains are a spectacular view from a distance. It is possible to book a rib safari/charter that within 30 minutes takes you across Vestfjorden to a close up experience of Lofoten itself (weather dependent).

Steigen has its own coastline and archipelago with hundreds of small islands and secluded white beaches. At the same time the areas intertidal zone with up to 4 meters difference between high and low tide – can be both challenging and majestic at the same time.As guest you can explore the area by kayaking, boating or just walking the shores.

The waters in the area are among the cleanest in the world. This makes these waters a perfect breeding ground for all sorts of mammals, whales, fish, sea eagles and more. As part of the stay you can through our cooperation partners come along on sea eagle safari/fishing to enjoy the wilderness in the area where you are staying. The season is all year around (weather dependent).

Steigen has a history that goes all the way back to the iron age and medieval times. Guest can also visit Viking-era graves at different locations, see old commercial trading posts (among others Grøtøy where Villa Haugen is located), Batterie Dietl one of Europe’s largest coastal fortifications from the Second World War, a coastal museum in Nordskot that focuses on the old fishing culture and has several old boats and equipment on display. We can also arrange a visit from local story tellers – people who know the history and is part of the local community. The season is all year around.

We can arrange spectacular camps in the vicinity of Villa Haugen – either up in the mountains or on one of the islands nearby – where you can experience an outdoor picnic with all the glamour of an inside entertainment. The season is all year around (weather dependent). Or - you can come along to watch or even take part in how fish and seafood in general is being harvested and prepared for your lunch. This may also include lunching on the beach on an island nearby. Returning to Villa Haugen – you can also take part in learning filleting your fish of the day. The season is all year around (weather dependent).

If you are one of those who don’t enjoy chasing activities all day long when out travelling – you may still take pleasure in our three day basics gourmet concept focusing on tranquillity and serenity. For instance, you can use two hours or more on breakfast. Likewise, you can use the area and its facilities to just relax and watch the days and nights go by. Even harsh weather can be experienced close up from inside the pavilion or the boat house. The location itself is free from light pollution and thereby a perfect spot to experience the northern lights - and the sounds you hear are the sounds of the nature itself. Read more...

We can offer an ocean adventure concept based on a two (2) night stay focusing on the “culinary delights” of the sea.
